How overtime works
Under the U.S. federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most hourly employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a single workweek. Some states add daily rules — California, for example, also pays overtime after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12. This calculator uses the federal weekly rule; if your state has daily overtime, your actual pay may be higher.
The math: regular pay is your first 40 hours at your normal rate. Overtime hours are paid at your rate × 1.5 (or × 2 for double time).
Common questions
Is overtime calculated per day or per week?
Federally, per week: hours over 40 in one workweek. A long single day does not trigger federal overtime by itself, though some states (like California) do have daily rules.
Does this include taxes?
No — this is gross (before-tax) pay. A paycheck calculator with taxes is on our roadmap.
I'm salaried. Does this apply to me?
It depends on whether your job is classified as exempt. Many salaried employees are exempt from federal overtime; if you are unsure, check with your employer or the Department of Labor.
